My Personal Favorites - A Traditional Recipe Collection
Every cook, baker, hobbyist or professional chef has a set collection of favorite recipes that they use regularly. Whether it's fancy fare, or something quick and simple for a meal on-the-go, it's loved and fallen back on by either default or preferential design.
Everything about traditional cooking and fare appeals to me, as it has since my youth. I grew up in a home where cooking very similarly to how it was done during the Great Depression was still the practice, albeit on a much different scale. We didn't have rations and waste to worry about, of course, nor were basic pantry staples in short supply. But the fare was the same - hearty, healthy meals that not only filled you for the time being but for several hours to come. Recipes centered around fresh foods that not only smelled good and tasted amazing, but the very dishes that our family members several generations back in time had eaten.
To me, the desire to learn traditional ways of cooking was not borne simply out of my love for cooking itself, but also because there was a family history lesson in every recipe in our home. When I was just beginning my adventure into cooking, my grandmother would often catch me daydreaming about being someone from our past, cooking in those times and conditions. Creating meals out of literally nothing, more often than not, when things got bad. Always making enough, somehow, to not only feed those at our table, but also enough to share with a family less fortunate down the way a bit.
All of the recipes on this site are from my family's kitchen. Not everything will appeal to every palette, of course, but nothing is posted that we don't eat and enjoy in our own home. All canning recipes are up to current (2016) safety standards in both ingredients and procedure. If something isn't listed in either the ingredients or body of the recipe, it simply isn't present. As with any recipe, if you have specific allergies, please use caution.
